The New Horizons Band of Sonoma County came together for the first time in January, 1999 under the leadership of retired high school band director, Lew Sbrana. The band started with 12 stalwarts, ages 50+ to 80+, who were either beginners or were picking up their instruments again after many years of not playing.

The first concert was actually an open rehearsal at The Senior Center with an audience of mostly children and grandchildren of the players.

Over a decade and a half later, the band has outgrown several rehearsal spaces, and has 70 to 80 members. Bob Ressue and Sidney Gordon joined Lew at the podium. The music literature has increased in difficulty level from beginning to medium and the group now eagerly attempts some advanced pieces. One of the greatest delights of director Sid Gordon is his annual trip down to Redwood High School to borrow more challenging music for the band, which plays an eclectic repertoire for a wide range of audiences.

In March 2009, New Horizons Band of Sonoma County sponsored its first "Wine Country Band Camp", a five day event for members of New Horizons Band members from the US and Canada.

In 2010, Bob Ressue added an Improv Band and a Swing Band. Later in the year, Lew Sbrana, launched the The Start-Up Band, a beginning level band for new players and experienced players wanting to learn a new instrument. With the help of musicians from the Concert Band, the newest band is off to a great start.

Membership in our band becomes membership in a very special family. Much of our history is captured in our photo gallery. Please enjoy!
